The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 guaranteed the Lakota Sioux ownership of the Black Hills and a vast territory in perpetuity, in exchange for peace on the northern plains. The treaty represented one of the most solemn commitments the United States government made to a Native nation. The subsequent violation of the treaty, following the discovery of gold in the Black Hills, became one of the most contested acts in American history.
