In 1874, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led a military expedition into the Black Hills, sacred to the Lakota Sioux, and confirmed reports of gold in the region. The discovery triggered a rush of prospectors into land guaranteed to the Lakota by treaty. The resulting conflict led to the Great Sioux War of 1876 and the eventual loss of the Black Hills by the Lakota.
