In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled up the Missouri River through what is now South Dakota, encountering the Sioux, Arikara, and other Native peoples of the Great Plains. Their accounts of the region's landscapes and peoples were among the first detailed records of South Dakota produced by American explorers. The expedition established American knowledge of the region.
