Route 66 Established

Route 66, established in 1926, ran diagonally across Oklahoma from northeast to southwest, passing through communities large and small. Oklahoma towns became beloved stops along the Mother Road for travelers heading west. During the Dust Bowl, Route 66 became the escape route for tens of thousands of Oklahomans fleeing poverty and drought.
