Oklahoma was at the center of the Dust Bowl catastrophe of the 1930s, when severe drought and years of poor farming practices caused massive soil erosion across the southern Great Plains. Hundreds of thousands of Oklahomans, known as Okies, fled to California and other states in search of survival. John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath depicted the desperation of this migration.
