On April 22, 1889, the federal government opened the Unassigned Lands in Indian Territory to non-Native settlement in the first of several Oklahoma land runs. At noon, thousands of settlers raced by horse, wagon, and on foot to stake their claims. Within hours, tent cities had appeared across the territory, and towns including Guthrie and Oklahoma City had been established.
