Beginning in the 1830s, the federal government forced tens of thousands of Native Americans from their eastern homelands to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole nations, among others, made the terrible journey that became known as the Trail of Tears. These nations rebuilt their governments, schools, and communities in Indian Territory, creating a rich civic and cultural life.
