The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed in 1848 to end the Mexican-American War, transferred New Mexico and a vast southwestern territory to the United States. New Mexico's existing Hispanic and Native American population were promised citizenship and protection of their land rights under the treaty. The agreement reshaped the cultural and political landscape of the Southwest.
