New Mexico was admitted to the Union on January 6, 1912, as the 47th state. The territory had waited for statehood longer than almost any other, in part because of concerns in Congress about its predominantly Hispanic and Native American population. Statehood reflected the reality that New Mexico had developed a distinctive and vital culture rooted in three major traditions.
