In August 1680, Pueblo peoples across New Mexico rose up against Spanish colonial rule in a coordinated rebellion led by Popé, a Tewa religious leader. The revolt drove Spanish colonizers south to El Paso del Norte and kept the Pueblo peoples free from Spanish control for twelve years. It remains one of the most successful Indigenous rebellions against European colonization in North American history.
