Nevada was admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864, in the midst of the Civil War. President Lincoln supported Nevada's rapid admission in part to ensure additional electoral and congressional votes for the Union cause. Nevada's entry as a state was among the fastest transitions from territory to statehood in American history.
