The discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode near Virginia City in 1859 brought a massive influx of miners, merchants, and entrepreneurs to the Nevada Territory. The silver rush created instant cities and generated enormous wealth that helped finance the Union during the Civil War. Virginia City became one of the most prosperous and colorful boomtowns in the American West.
