Las Vegas was founded in 1905 when the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad auctioned off town lots at a railroad stop in the Mojave Desert. The small desert town grew slowly at first, supported by mining, ranching, and the railroad. Its transformation into a global entertainment destination came decades later with the legalization of gambling.
