Wyoming's vast open ranges supported one of the largest cattle ranching economies in the American West during the late nineteenth century. Large cattle operations controlled enormous stretches of public land, and Wyoming's cowboys became symbols of the frontier West. The Johnson County War of 1892, which pitted large ranchers against small homesteaders, became one of the most dramatic conflicts of the open range era.
