Wisconsin became the laboratory for progressivism under Governor Robert La Follette in the early twentieth century. La Follette pioneered direct primary elections, railroad regulation, and the use of expert advisors from the University of Wisconsin in state government. The Wisconsin Idea established the state as a national model for progressive governance and the partnership between academia and public policy.
