On October 8, 1871, a catastrophic wildfire swept through the forests of northeastern Wisconsin, killing an estimated 1,500 to 2,500 people in and around Peshtigo. The Peshtigo Fire was the deadliest wildfire in American history but received little attention because it occurred on the same night as the Great Chicago Fire. The disaster led to changes in fire prevention and forest management practices.
