The Republican Party was founded in Ripon, Wisconsin, on February 28, 1854, by former Whigs, Free Soilers, and Democrats who opposed the expansion of slavery under the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Wisconsin's role in the founding of the party placed it at the center of the political realignment that preceded the Civil War. The Republican Party went on to elect Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860.
