Wisconsin was admitted to the Union on May 29, 1848, as the 30th state. Settlers from New England, New York, and Europe had moved into the territory in large numbers through the preceding decade. Wisconsin's admission reflected the rapid settlement of the upper Midwest and the ambition of its diverse immigrant communities.
