In August and September of 1921, approximately 10,000 armed coal miners marched through the mountains of southern West Virginia in the largest labor uprising in American history. The miners clashed with company guards, state police, and eventually federal troops in the Battle of Blair Mountain. Though the uprising was suppressed, it became a defining moment in the history of the American labor movement.
