West Virginia's coal fields in the Appalachian mountains became among the most productive in the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Coal from West Virginia powered American industry and homes, but the work of mining was dangerous and the conditions often harsh. The coal camps of West Virginia became centers of a distinctive culture and fierce labor organizing.
