The Territory of Washington was established in 1853, separating the northern portion of Oregon Territory into its own administrative unit. The creation of the territory acknowledged the growing population and commercial activity in the Puget Sound region. Washington Territory's development accelerated through the second half of the nineteenth century with the growth of timber, fishing, and railroad connections.
