When Virginia seceded from the Union in April 1861, Richmond became the capital of the Confederacy. Virginia was the most populous Confederate state and the site of many of the Civil War's most significant campaigns. The state was devastated by four years of warfare, and Richmond was evacuated and partly burned before Lee's surrender at Appomattox in April 1865.
