On January 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher at Spindletop near Beaumont, Texas, blew oil more than a hundred feet into the air, announcing the beginning of the modern petroleum industry. The discovery transformed Texas's economy and eventually made it the largest oil-producing state in the nation. Spindletop launched companies that grew into global energy giants.
