Texas Joins the United States

Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29, 1845, as the 28th state. Its annexation contributed to the Mexican-American War and the westward expansion of the United States. Texas brought to the Union not only its vast territory but also its powerful sense of identity as a former independent republic.
