Rhode Island was among the most defiant of the colonies in its resistance to British rule, and on May 4, 1776, it formally renounced its allegiance to King George III, becoming the first colony to do so. Rhode Island's long tradition of resisting outside authority made it a natural leader in the independence movement. The date is now observed as Rhode Island Independence Day.
