In 1636, Roger Williams, banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious and political views, established the settlement of Providence on land he purchased from the Narragansett people. Williams championed the separation of church and state and the freedom of conscience. Providence became the foundation of Rhode Island's tradition of religious tolerance and independent thinking.
