Beginning in 1843, thousands of American settlers made the 2,000-mile journey along the Oregon Trail from the Missouri River to the Willamette Valley. The trail brought families seeking land, opportunity, and a fresh start to Oregon's fertile valleys. Over the following decades, more than 300,000 emigrants traveled the trail, making it one of the great mass migrations in American history.
