In November 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition reached the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Columbia River in what is now Oregon, completing their transcontinental journey. The Corps of Discovery spent the winter at Fort Clatsop before beginning their return to St. Louis. Their accounts of the region's resources and landscapes sparked American interest in the Pacific Northwest.
