On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first successful powered airplane flight in history at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The flight lasted only twelve seconds but opened the door to the age of aviation. North Carolina honors this achievement with its state motto, First in Flight.
