North Carolina seceded from the Union in May 1861 and contributed more soldiers to the Confederate Army than any other Southern state. The state's citizens fought in virtually every major engagement of the Civil War. North Carolina also saw significant military action on its own soil, particularly along the coast and in the Piedmont.
