Construction began on Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in Montana in 1933 as one of the largest New Deal public works projects. The dam created Fort Peck Lake, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, and brought thousands of jobs to a region hit hard by the Depression. The project demonstrated the federal government's capacity to transform the landscape of the West.
