In 1916, Jeannette Rankin of Montana became the first woman elected to the United States House of Representatives, four years before women gained the constitutional right to vote nationally. A committed pacifist, she was one of the few members of Congress to vote against U.S. entry into both World War I and World War II. Rankin's election was a landmark moment in the history of American democracy.
