The Missouri Compromise of 1820 attempted to balance the admission of slave and free states to the Union by admitting Missouri as a slave state alongside Maine as a free state. The compromise also established a geographic line limiting the expansion of slavery in the Louisiana Territory. It preserved the political peace for three decades before tensions over slavery erupted again.
