In May 1804, the Corps of Discovery led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out from Camp Dubois near St. Louis on their historic journey to explore the Louisiana Territory. Their departure marked Missouri as the launching point for one of the greatest explorations in American history. St. Louis became known as the Gateway to the West.
