Minnesota's Iron Range in the northeastern part of the state produced enormous quantities of iron ore during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The massive open-pit mines of the Mesabi Range fueled American steel production and supported the war effort during both World Wars. Iron Range communities built a distinctive culture shaped by immigrant workers and the rhythms of mining.
