In August 1862, the U.S.-Dakota War broke out in southwestern Minnesota as Dakota people, facing starvation and treaty violations, rose against American settlers. The conflict resulted in significant casualties on both sides and ended with the largest mass execution in American history, when 38 Dakota men were hanged in Mankato. The war and its aftermath left deep wounds in Minnesota's history.
