Michigan was admitted to the Union on January 26, 1837, as the 26th state. Settlement had accelerated following the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. Statehood brought formal governance to the Great Lakes region and set the stage for Michigan's remarkable growth during the nineteenth century.
