In 1701, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac established Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit on the strait connecting Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. The settlement grew into Detroit, one of the oldest cities in the American Midwest. Detroit's strategic location on the Great Lakes made it a center of trade, military activity, and eventually industry.
