Maine became the 23rd state on March 15, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise. Maine had been part of Massachusetts since colonial times, and its residents had long sought separate governance. Statehood allowed Maine to develop its own political institutions and pursue its distinctive economic and cultural identity.
