Popham Colony

Popham Colony

In 1607, English colonists established the Popham Colony at the mouth of the Kennebec River in what is now Maine, making it one of the earliest English settlement attempts in North America. Though the colony lasted only a year before being abandoned, it demonstrated English interest in the region. The colonists built the first English vessel constructed in the Americas before sailing home.
