Following the Civil War, Kansas became the northern terminus of major cattle drives from Texas. Cities like Abilene and Dodge City served as railheads where longhorn cattle were loaded onto trains heading east. The cattle drives brought cowboys, commerce, and lawmen into Kansas and became one of the defining chapters of the American West.
