Quantrill's Raid

1863

Quantrill's Raid

On August 21, 1863, Confederate guerrilla leader William Quantrill led a raid on Lawrence, Kansas, massacring more than 150 civilians and burning much of the town. The attack was one of the deadliest episodes of guerrilla warfare during the Civil War. The Lawrence massacre deepened sectional hatred and hardened Kansas' commitment to the Union cause.
