Idaho was admitted to the Union on July 3, 1890, as the 43rd state. Settlement had grown substantially through mining, ranching, and the arrival of the railroad. Statehood brought formal governance to a region that had long been governed as a territory and signaled Idaho's emergence as a productive part of the American West.
