Hawaii Statehood

On August 21, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state to join the United States, completing the nation's expansion to its current form. Statehood followed years of advocacy by Hawaii's residents and reflected the islands' strategic and economic importance. Hawaii's admission brought together people of diverse backgrounds under one state government in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
