In 1565, Spanish colonists established St. Augustine, making it the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the continental United States. The city served as a military and administrative center for Spanish Florida for more than two centuries. Its historic streets, fort, and architecture remain a living record of America's earliest colonial life.
