In 1839, captive Africans aboard the schooner Amistad seized control of the ship and were eventually brought to New Haven, Connecticut, where their case went to court. The legal battle over their freedom reached the U.S. Supreme Court and became a landmark moment in the fight against slavery. The Amistad case drew national attention to the injustice of the slave trade.
