Spruce Knob, at 4,863 feet the highest point in West Virginia, offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and became a symbol of the state's rugged highland character. The Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area was developed to protect and provide access to this remarkable landscape.
