On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens in southwestern Washington erupted in the largest volcanic event in recorded American history, killing 57 people and releasing an enormous plume of ash across the Pacific Northwest. The eruption reshaped the mountain and the surrounding landscape. The disaster transformed scientific understanding of volcanic systems and became a defining event for Pacific Northwesterners.
