In July 1619, the Virginia General Assembly convened for the first time at Jamestown, establishing the first representative legislative body in the English colonies in North America. The assembly gave colonists a voice in their governance and established a tradition of self-rule. That same summer, the first enslaved Africans arrived in English Virginia, beginning the tragic history of American slavery.
