In October 1864, a group of Confederate soldiers crossed from Canada into St. Albans, Vermont, robbed three banks, and attempted to burn the town before fleeing back into Canada. The St. Albans Raid was the northernmost land action of the Civil War. The incident inflamed diplomatic tensions between the United States and Britain over Canada's role as a base for Confederate operations.
